"Game of Thrones" roared back onto the Emmy battlefield, topping Thursday's nominations with 22 bids but facing a formidable opponent in "The Handmaid's Tale, " last year's top drama series.

Last year's Outstanding Drama Series victor The Handmaid's Tale will look to defend its title from Game of Thrones, which is returning to eligibility this year after arriving too late in 2017 to compete in last year's Emmys.

Meanwhile, the platform breakdown saw streaming giant Netflix oust premium cable channel HBO from the top of the nominations tally.

Out of the 91 nominations a year ago, HBO won 29 statues overall (10 in Primetime categories, 19 in Creative Arts), while Netflix won 20 (four in Primetime, 16 in Creative Arts). Additional HBO projects that scored big were "Barry" with 13 noms, including comedy series; "Silicon Valley" with seven, including comedy series, and "Curb Your Enthusiasm" with four, including comedy series.
