Microsoft chief product officer Panos Panay said the Surface Go is meant to be a more accessible way to get hold of the Surface's premium features. It's no powerhouse, with just a basic Intel Atom processor and 4GB of Ram, but with its sub-1kg weight and Full HD touchscreen, if you just want to get some very light work done on the go, it could be a good option.

Inside, the Surface Go is powered by a 7th generation dual-core Intel Pentium Gold processor and a 64GB eMMC solid-state drive in a fanless design. This is in addition to the Surface Connector which can also be used for charging purposes and connecting the Surface desktop dock.

On the heels of delivering its long-promised Surface USB-C adapter, Microsoft will be adding two other USB-C adapters to its Surface peripheral line-up.

As for cameras, you're looking at typical front and back cameras with a Windows Hello IR Camera for facial recognition security. There's also a built-in kickstand that can extend to 165 degrees.

Microsoft also unveiled the Surface Go Signature Type Cover which, it claims, will offer the best possible typing experience with an ergonomic key pitch and key travel, as well as the Windows PRecision Trackpad with five-point multi-finger gestures.

The Surface Go will come with Windows 10 in S mode as well as a 30-day trial of Microsoft Office 365 Home, while the Windows 10 Pro version will add an additional $50 to the price.

The Surface Go Type Cover is also available for preorder on the Microsoft Store and comes in at £99.99 for the black version while the platinum, cobalt blue or burgundy options made from Alcantara are priced at £124.99.

Microsoft - Surface USB-C-to-USB Adapter. The $400 price tag is nearly tempting until you consider the $99 Surface Pen and $99 Surface Type Cover you probably want to buy with it. It will hit the shelves on August 2 though. Does it look more tempting than an iPad?
