The duke, who is visiting Dublin with his wife, was asked by a reporter if "football was coming home" - the chant from the hugely popularly Three Lions anthem. The track was originally released in 1996 (when England hosted that year's European Championships) and features comedians David Baddiel and Frank Skinner.

Three Lions is a close contender for this week's Number 1 in the Official Charts, and even the current chart-topper, Hertford singer-songwriter George Ezra, wants the song to replace his single Shotgun at the top.

England got off to about as good a start as the team could have hoped for against Croatia in the World Cup semifinal.

That is perhaps unsurprising given his missed penalty provided the final nail in England's Euro '96 coffin, and remains England's last act in the last four of a tournament until kick-off on Wednesday night.

England's experience at the World Cup in Russian Federation will not only set the standard for future generations but this will also be the beginning of a new era of English football, said coach Gareth Soutgate.

Fans tell me they are quite nervous, though England is leading with a goal. Wednesday evening is a huge opportunity for our boys to do what many of us thought was impossible before the World Cup began and reach the Final.

Although Wembley was the home of English football long before 1990, back then England's home matches happened under the twin towers, rather than the arch.

"I would just walk out of the room, it is an anthem and has followed the team for a long time but involved some hard moments as well".

Southgate added: "You learn from situations in life and you are stronger for these moments and of course when I look at where we are in a tournament, I am proud of the way the players have played".
