The virus was identified at a mosquito pool in Jamaica Plain, according to the Boston Public Health Commission.

Be Aware of Peak Mosquito Hours - The hours from dusk to dawn are peak biting times for many mosquitoes.

"Culex pipiens mosquitoes, which are the primary carriers of West Nile virus, are most abundant in mid- to late summer, when the weather is hot", said Michael Adam, Senior Biologist for the Health Department.

Insect repellents that contain DEET, picaridin or oil of lemon eucalyptus are effective but should be used with care. "If you have to be outside, wear long-sleeved shirts, long trousers, shoes and socks as weather permits", said Huang. Consult with a pediatrician or family physician if you have questions about the use of repellent on children, as repellent is not recommended for children under the age of two months. Permethrin products are intended for use on items such as clothing, shoes, bed nets and camping gear and should not be applied to skin.

Use air conditioning or window and door screens that are in good fix to keep mosquitoes out.

To protect yourself against mosquitoes, health officials recommend using insect repellent, repairing torn window screens, wearing long sleeves and trousers, and draining standing water, which mosquitoes use to breed.

Clean out birdbaths, wading pools and swimming pools. All property should be maintained to prohibit the formation of stagnant pools of water, which may affect adversely the public health by attracting and harboring mosquitoes and other insects. Keep them outside by having tightly-fitting screens on all of your windows and doors.
