Lewis Hamilton also took the chequered flag early at the 2014 Chinese Grand Prix, when it was waved one lap early by mistake.

"The chequered flag was shown a lap early because there was a miscommunication between the start platform and the guy that they call the starter, the guy that starts and finishes the races", Whiting explained during a media briefing.

Drivers continued to race for the extra lap, despite the fact that at some points on the track marshals were waving multiple flags in the traditional end of race salute.

During the Canadian Grand Prix on Sunday, the 23-year-old supermodel waved the checkered flag to signal the end of the race a full lap early, on the 69th lap of the 70-lap race.

The Australian recorded his time on the official final lap of the race but Harlow's error meant Max Verstappen instead got the fastest lap honour.

Vettel was understandably less than impressed with the gaffe as he went on team radio to say: "Tell them not to wave the chequered flag when it's not done yet".

Sunday's error did have one minor ramification, however: Daniel Ricciardo had the fastest lap of the race, but it came on the now-erased Lap 70.

"We're dealing with different human beings, different countries, different languages and it's not always absolutely flawless".

Later he added: 'I told my team on the last lap so people would not jump on the track to celebrate. "Of course we strive for perfection but fortunately, there was no harm done as far as it affected the result". It later emerged that the flag had been handed to her at the incorrect moment due to a miscommunication between the start/finish gantry and race control.
