Sony share price dips as Fortnite account controversy draws ire

They found that if they had previously played Fortnite on PlayStation 4, there was no way to use that account on Nintendo Switch.

Fortnite players wishing to play the newly released Switch version of the game have discovered that their Epic Games accounts are being blocked if they ever played the game on a PlayStation 4.

"We're always open to hearing what the PlayStation community is interested in to enhance their gaming experience", a Sony representative said to the BBC.

The company went on to tout its 79 million consoles sold worldwide and said that it has a "huge community of gamers who can play together on Fortnite and all online titles".

Cricket's governing body, the ICC, tweeted that any disciplinary issues would be addressed at the end of play. Five penalty runs have been added to the West Indies total.

Epic has managed to achieve this within less than 12 months; Fortnite Battle Royale, the most popular iteration of the game by far, was originally released as an Early Access title back in September 2017. The one that's now making headlines is the account connectivity problem that's basically screwing tons of Switch players out of items they've paid for and their account progress.

This is not the first time Sony has refused to work with Microsoft and Nintendo to support cross-play. These links leave Siliconera. For example, an Xbox One player could compete against PC gamers. When they tried to log into Epic Games account, which they used on their PlayStation, all were unable to carry across their progress, or in fact anything, to their Switch.

Sony is taking a lot of criticism at the moment with regards to cross-play. Whenever we do have additional information, you can be sure we'll share it with you as soon as it's available. So, Microsoft and Nintendo have much to gain from cross-play being a thing, if you look at it that way. You would think that Sony would have learnt some humility after their mistakes with the PS3, but apparently not. Neither the Fortnite website nor Epic Customer Service are able to change this. The case of "Fortnite" is less about cross-play and more about letting one access an account on multiple game consoles, but "Fortnite" is a game that millions of people play every day, even on smartphones; cross-play should be allowed there.

"Using the app's Online Lounge, you can send online play invitations to players on your Nintendo Switch system's friend list", the Online App description reads.
