The CDC reported Saturday that the melon has been recalled in eight states: Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Missouri, Ohio, Georgia, Kentucky and North Carolina. Those in the affected states are advised to throw the melon away.

Packages of pre-cut fresh fruit have been linked to a salmonella outbreak that sickened dozens of people, according to the Centers for Disease Control.

-Stores selling the pre-cut melon (with brand name if applicable): Walmart (Freshness Guaranteed); Whole Foods/Amazon (Whole Foods Market); Costco (Garden Highway); Kroger (generic label distributed by Renaissance Food Group); Walgreens (Delish); Trader Joe's (Trader Joe's); Jay C; Payless; Owen's; and Sprouts (Sprouts Farmers Market).

As reported by The New York Times, packages of fresh-cut watermelon, honeydew melon and cantaloupe are now being recalled in Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, North Carolina and Ohio.

The FDA said it's working with the CDC to determine if the recalled products went to additional stores or states. Caito's website says the Indianapolis Service Center and Fresh Cut facility is located at 3120 N. Post Road. If you have purchased any fruit that may have been connected with the recall, the CDC is asking that you throw it away immediately.

"Most persons infected with salmonella develop diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps 12 to 72 hours after infection". Most people can recover from the illness one their own, but if the infection manages to make the jump from the digestive system to the blood stream it can eventually result in death unless medical treatment is administered. At least 31 people were hospitalized.
