Kim nuclear summit praised, but big questions loom

Trump has been criticized for already announcing the halting of "war games", or military exercises, with South Korea, a move long sought by Pyongyang.

When asked if US President Donald Trump should have mentioned North Korea's cyber weapons in the summit, Mr Beloussov said he wouldn't criticise the US, as "denuclearisation is a great step".

Trump's claim that North Korea no longer poses a nuclear threat is questionable considering Pyongyang's significant weapons arsenal. "I don't know exactly what form that will take, but I'm very confident that by some time in the next week or so we will begin the engagement".

He said Pyongyang was committed to giving up its nuclear programme.

At the summit, Trump emphasized what North Korea has to gain by giving up its nuclear weapons and rejoining the worldwide community - a subject he returned to on Twitter.

Trump said, 'We're flying planes in from Guam, we're bombing empty mountains for practice. Tehran's government is still weighing whether it will stick by the accord or leave and potentially renounce the nuclear non-proliferation treaty - the accord North Korea ditched in 2003 before detonating its first bomb three years later.

But he added: "Major disarmament".

"It is worrisome, very worrisome, that this joint statement is so imprecise", Schumer added.

"It's in the statement".

"I suppose we could argue semantics, but let me assure you it's in the document", Pompeo told reporters Wednesday in Seoul.

"Just landed - a long trip, but everybody can now feel much safer than the day I took office", Trump tweeted early Wednesday.

Pompeo said Trump would resume the military drills if North Korea stops negotiating in good faith.

"It has grown its capabilities far greater than any other country previously under the regime of Kim Jong-un - I recall a testimony from a defector, stating that it now has around 1,800 specialists, some of them handpicked as RNK's most talented computer experts".

Pompeo faced immediate questioning from his traveling press about the content of the agreement with North Korea.

Following the summit, Trump said the USA would halt its "provocative" joint military drills with South Korea as long as negotiations are ongoing with the North, an announcement that caught Seoul by surprise. The next military exercise is scheduled for August, and in years past, has drawn thousands of troops from the U.S., South Korea and other countries. He also has clearly indicated that withdrawing United States troops from South Korea was on the table for the future. But if United Nations nuclear watchdogs sought entry into an Iranian military site, suspecting illegal nuclear work was taking place there, they would have had to go through an worldwide dispute mechanism that would take a minimum of 24 days to process.

A government source familiar with the matter told Reuters that Japanese officials planned to discuss the summit meeting with North Korean officials at an worldwide conference on Northeast Asian security to be held in Mongolia on Thursday and Friday.

But the USA president trumpeted the outcome as a "deal" with North Korea and vowed there would be "no more rocket launches, nuclear testing or research!" Trump has drawn bipartisan criticism at home for agreeing to pause joint U.S. -South Korean exercises appeared off-limits under the new guidance. The official acknowledged, however, it was still not certain how that was going to happen. To secure Kim's signature on the Singapore agreement, Washington jettisoned its historic focus on North Korean human rights abuses - a question officials in Tokyo will likely raise with Pompeo in coming days.
