Google Doodle celebrates diverse cultures for World Cup kickoff

The combined North American bid of the United States, Mexico and Canada was awarded the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Wednesday, moving Baltimore one step closer toward possibly hosting a match in the quadrennial soccer competition.

The joint bid had been the front-runner for the 48-team tournament from the moment a North American coalition was first mooted two years ago, and there have been spells when it has looked like the only credible candidate.

The United States, Mexico and Canada will host soccer's biggest event in 2026.

The vote was conducted on the eve of the 2018 World Cup, which is scheduled to kick off Thursday in host nation Russian Federation.

"They have at their disposal not only the financial resources but, more importantly, the policing and security resources to make sure we do that well", he said.

The country has competed in just one World Cup in its history, qualifying for the 1986 tournament and failing to collect a single point from three matches.

It's estimated to cost each city between $30 and $50 million to host 2026 games.

In the closing days before the vote, Trump ― who won't be president during the 2026 World Cup, even if he wins re-election in 2020 ― promised that visiting players and fans would not face visa problems around the tournament.

Federation Internationale de Football Association eyes big crowds, bigger profits at 2026 World Cup
Canada hosted the 24-team FIFA Women's World Cup in 2015, as well as the Under-20 World Cup in 2007. It will also be played during the 250th anniversary celebrations of the country, founded in 1776.

The city is working with the Edmonton Eskimos and other community groups on a master plan to upgrade Commonwealth Stadium. Not to speak of the over 7 billion people in all continents of the globe, who are following this great football event on their TV screens, Saudi Press Agency said Wednesday.

The stadium will also get an upgrade for the World Cup, with the capacity growing from about 15,000 seats to 45,000 thanks to temporary stands in the north and south end, like the setup for last year's MLS Cup final and the NHL's Centennial Classic in 2016.

Iveson said Commonwealth Stadium is earmarked for upgrades regardless of whether the city gets to host Federation Internationale de Football Association 2026 games.

Before the United States hosted the World Cup in 1994, the sport was in a far different and inferior position.

This was the first World Cup vote since 2010, when USA and Switzerland investigators unveiled corruption on an unprecedented scale afterwards. Canada has never hosted a men's World Cup, though it was the site of the 2015 Women's World Cup.

Schmidt, who has played professionally in Frankfurt, Germany, for four years, believes Edmonton is well-positioned to co-host the worldwide soccer event.
