The Potters have moved swiftly to recruit a new leader after sacking Paul Lambert following the club's relegation from the Premier League.

Now such is the belief that Rowett is the man for Stoke, Bookmakers have closed the market on the next boss.

Gary Rowett is expected to become the new Stoke City manager after the club opened talks with Derby County over compensation and he asked for permission to speak to the club.

Rowett is understood to be their chief target for the job, although he only signed a three-and-a-half year deal in January.

Sky Sports have reported that the compensation that Stoke City will owe Derby County is somewhere in the region of £1.8 million.

The 44-year-old turned around the fortunes of the Blues, taking them from 21st to 10th place in his first season in charge, making him a real favourite with the fans at St Andrews.

Stoke are determined to return to the Premier League at the first time of asking and Rowett, who knows the Championship well, could be trusted with the task of delivering promotion.
