MSU President responds to $500 million settlement

The university announced on Wednesday it had reached a tentative settlement with the survivors of Dr. Larry Nassar.

Nassar, 54, a former Olympic gymnastics doctor, is serving an effective life term after pleading guilty to assaulting nine girls and women in MI, as well as to federal child pornography crimes, and being sentenced to up to 175 years in jail.

That's despite women who say they reported the abuse to university officials and a Title IX investigation into Nassar. We also thank the mediator and all who participated in crafting this settlement. Insurance companies will contribute some of the money, but the university appears to be on the hook for most of it. "No, I mean seriously, we have not made those decisions".

Like you, I deeply regret the injury done to so many girls and young women, and to their families, by a physician operating under the aegis of this university.

The package of bills aimed at preventing sexual assaults and approved by the Michigan Senate on March 14 would strip MSU's ability to defend itself.

MI attorney general Bill Schuette has appointed an independent prosecutor to investigate who at the university knew what, when they knew it and what they did about it. "Not from taxpayers, '" said Senator Rick Jones (R-Grand Ledge). "But I can tell you from my church abuse cases, the vast majority are so appreciative of having finality". Go find your money from MSU, not from us - State Sen. She said a tuition increase tied specifically to the Nassar case is unlikely.

"It's not our intent to do that", he said.

Mike Sonko appoints Miguna Miguna deputy governor
Both Kamba natives, Dr Mutunga wondered why Governor Sonko was benchmarking with Dubai whereas garbage was right here in Nairobi. The Constitution is clear that a deputy governor needs to be a Kenyan citizen. "I humbly ask the governor to withdraw the name".

"Look into your own funds first".

And if Engler still needs help, Kesto says he just needs to look deeper.

Asked Thursday evening to comment on Engler's comments, MSU Trustee Brian Mosallam provided a statement to 24 Hour News 8 that read simply, "My focus right now is to collaborate with my fellow trustees and garner support for my proposal and reform".

Engler also said that "students and taxpayers" could be on the hook for some of the charges.

"The state may make it hard for MSU to use either state aid or tuition to pay the settlement, and it's reasonable that the school sees fewer alumni donations and student enrollment applications going forward, at least in the short term", said Matt Fabian, a partner at Municipal Market Analytics.

Nassar, 54, will be locked up for the rest of his life under three decades-long sentences for molesting athletes with his hands and possessing child pornography.
