Michael Carrick Makes Switch To Coaching Role At Old Trafford

Manchester United were 1-0 winners against Watford in their final Premier League game of the 2017-18 season.

Veteran midfielder Carrick, 36, is hanging up his boots to take up a position on Mourinho's backroom staff - although that move was planned before news of Faria's departure was announced at the weekend.

"I am not training this week".

'I am going to simply attempt to converse to as many individuals as I can; be a nuisance, be a pest. "I'm going to have coaches, assistant coaches, fitness coaches and a structure where they have specialists in different areas connected to performance".

'It changes overnight, ' Carrick said.

Jose Mourinho's trusted number two has done it all with the self-proclaimed "Special One" during their 17 years as a duo, from winning a treble with Inter Milan to amassing 100 La Liga points with in a single season with Real Madrid. It all fits in.

"At the time, it must have been every United supporter's nightmare, to see them across the road, who have always been in your shadow, and actually you've been laughing at them for a few years, and now they have manager you always wanted, playing the type of football you would give anything for". It was the final chance to cut the cloth clean. "As soon as this came up I didn't think twice", he said.

"He is, no doubt, one of the best midfielders of his generation, although in certain moments he has been underrated - never by his team-mates nor by any other colleague in this sport, for if you like football you like Carrick".

While replacing a player of Carrick's calibre is problematic, the reality is United have familiarised themselves with that conundrum during the season.

'Briefly, sure, and I'll do, ' he added.

Thus, Jose Mourinho should be on notice, and you know he will be as Mourinho has already intimated the idea that Carrick could be his top lieutenant in the future.

He said: 'You've got to go step by step.

'Because I've got things, I'm kind of more excited about the future than looking back and being sad that it's over'. I am not getting carried away right here'. It's not just game to game but half to half.

Some fans have expressed their concern that the Portuguese manager will be without one of his key staff members in what will be a defining season for him.

It was a potentially emotional occasion but Carrick preferred to look forward.
