Former Australian striker Archie Thompson is skeptical about Bert van Marwijk's Socceroos squad selection process leading up to the 2018 World Cup, admitting he'd have done things differently.
As naming rights sponsor of the Socceroos, Caltex has rebranded five Caltex sites across Australia to "Cahilltex" to mark its new partnership Tim Cahill ahead of the World Cup next month.
"There is no real individual connections for players because they have to come in such a short space of time and produce at a World Cup for Australia. they don't have time to be sentimental with players and do them favours".
Speaking to News Corp Australia ahead of the announcement, Cahill denied age and lack of playing time would hinder him in Russian Federation.
"Obviously I'm in great nick because I pride myself on professionalism and being in the top 20 per cent fitness-wise".
"I've fought every barrier, every single week of my life as a footballer".
TIM IRELAND AP Australian football great Tim Cahill has only played 63 minutes of club football in the last five months
"I'm looking forward to Bert (van Marwijk) looking for someone and if he looks on the bench or wants to start me, as a leader, that he knows he can count on".
Veteran Tim Cahill's record as Australia's World Cup saviour has helped keep him in the running for a place in Russian Federation next month - despite the fact that he has played barely an hour of soccer since quitting his A-League side Melbourne City six months ago to move to Millwall in pursuit of more game time. Maclaren, who scored a hat-trick for Scottish side Hibernian in their 5-5 league draw with Rangers on Sunday, was one of six cut from Van Marwijk's initial 32-man squad, along with goalkeeper Mitch Langerak and defender Bailey Wright.
"It is always a challenging task to reduce a squad, however this is the nature of professional sport at the highest level", van Marwijk said in a statement.
"I'm sure that in training in Antalya, and in our match against the Czech Republic, we'll see players pushing to go to a higher level as they compete for a place in the final squad", he added.
The reduced squad will travel to Turkey for a pre-tournament training camp before a friendly global against the Czech Republic in Austria on June 1.
Van Marwijk's mandate is based strictly on results, with the Dutchman's main aim to get the Socceroos out of a World Cup group containing France, Denmark and Peru. They kick-off on 16th June.
