Four UTSA Athletics programs recognized for academic excellence

"The key with the April is that it's a complete team effort, from our faculty to our campus advisers, coaches and administration", said Tommy Powell, the school's assistant provost for student-athlete academic development "We all work together to make a world-class experience for our student-athletes and prepare them for life when they leave". Of the teams recognized, 457 competed in men's or mixed sports, and 827 competed in women's sports.

"I applaud every program earning a Public Recognition Award this year for their commitment to going above and beyond to prepare students for life after college through academic achievement", NCAA President Mark Emmert said. The score for individual teams that do not have flawless scores are released by the NCAA at a later date. Swimming and diving was one of five programs, a school record, recognized in 2011-12 joining men's golf, men's tennis, gymnastics and volleyball.

Former student-athletes who return to school and graduate can earn a bonus point for their former team applied to the time he or she graduates.

Altogether Baylor has received 19 public April awards in seven different sports, including baseball (2007, 2012, 2018), men's basketball (2009, 2018), men's cross country (2006, 2011), men's golf (2010), women's golf (2009, 2010, 2015) soccer (2018) and softball (2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2017, 2018).

The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation, and provides a tangible measure of a team's academic performance. "Our Student-Athlete Success Program continues its outstanding work with all 24 of our sports and I want to thank them for their tireless dedication to our student-athletes". Those are men's basketball, women's soccer, men's cross country, men's track and women's tennis. The spring academic semester which just concluded was the 30th consecutive semester in which Wildcats student-athletes maintained a collective grade-point average above a 3.0, and the seventh straight semester in which the GPA for student-athletes was higher than a 3.2. The field hockey team, led by coach Char Morett, has received an NCAA Public Recognition Award nine times. Penn State ranks No. 4 among all Division I schools with 200 CoSIDA Academic All-Americans all-time, including Emily Ogle (women's soccer) and Haleigh Washington (women's volleyball) during the 2017 fall semester.

APRs for all Division I teams will be released May 23.
