Most memorably, Unai Emery was the man who oversaw Paris St. Germain lose a four-goal cushion against Barcelona in last year's Champions League knockout stages.

Previously he guided Sevilla to three consecutive Europa League triumphs between 2014 and 2016.

As the latest reports would have it, Emery will be the one to occupy the manager's seat at the Emirates come next season after winning the Ligue 1 title with PSG this season, only to be replaced by Thomas Tuchel as a direct result of his Champions League failure.

Emery, 46, became available after leaving Paris-Saint Germain at the end of the 2017-18 campaign, having won the Ligue 1 title, two Coupes de France, two Coupes de la Ligue and two French Supercups during his two seasons in charge there.

However, while he is described as "not completely fluent" in English, that is not described as a problem, and his appointment is expected to be ratified shortly.

It comes with Arsene Wenger leaving the club after nearly 22 seasons in charge.

According to David Ornstein of BBC Sport, "an announcement and news conference are expected later this week" to confirm Emery as Wenger's successor.

Other candidates included Juventus manager Massimiliano Allegri and former Chelsea and Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti, as well as former Arsenal players Arteta, Thierry Henry and Patrick Vieira.

Ex-Gunners captain Arteta had been tipped to lead them into the new era and is thought to have been chief executive Ivan Gazidis' preferred choice.

Arsenal, meanwhile, continue to go about the finishing touches of what is a first management recruitment process at the north London club in nearly a quarter of a century. So, who is Unai Emery?

"He is clearly a coach of great ability". If we do see a difference in intensity, drive and consistency everybody will get onside and that's all Arsenal fans want to see.
