Winnebago County reports 3 bleeding cases related to synthetic cannabinoids

The most recent woman to die after using synthetic marijuana was a central IL woman in her 30s.

The Illinois Department of Public Health on Monday said it will receive almost 800,000 vitamin K tablets, which if taken over several months can help restore blood clotting. Two men, one in his 20s and another in his 40s have also died in Central Illinois.

Another person has died from exposure to synthetic marijuana - the fourth in just the last few weeks, the IL department of Public Health said. Most victims are from the Chicago and Peoria areas.

Experts say brodifacoum prevents blood clotting and can lead to severe internal bleeding. Officials said the poison is believed to have been mixed in with the synthetic marijauana. Doctors say those suffering from bleeding need to take as many as 30 tablets a day for up to six months.

The agency recently received 800,000 Vitamin K doses donated by pharmaceutical firms to help in the case. Her death comes as the state deals with an outbreak of people experiencing severe bleeding after using synthetic marijuana.

Synthetic cannabinoids are human-made, mind-altering chemicals that are sprayed on to dried plant material.
