Why These Trees Are Being Planted for Watertown's Arbor Day

For the 16th year, the City of Albany was recognized today as a Tree City USA.

Through enduring partnerships with the U.S. Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters, the 50 millionth Arbor Day Foundation tree was planted in our nation's forests to help restore damage from insects, disease, and wildfires. Among various health benefits, being surrounded by trees can reduce stress, lower blood pressure and boost a person's mood, give a jolt to the immune system, and enhance sleep quality. Because their leaves fall off in the winter, deciduous trees also let the sun hit your house during the coldest months, providing heat to save additional money and electricity. Planting new trees now means the town's lush green summer canopy won't disappear once the old trees die.

Kindergarteners from Hose Elementary scooped dirt into the ground outside Crawfordsville High School's aquatic center on Thursday, giving life to the Class of 2030's Legacy Tree.

"The experience each year to make an impact across the country has deeply touched our employees, who are witnessing the devastation and planting new trees in Texas", shared Bob O'Leary, president and chief executive officer of Philadelphia Insurance Companies.

It's possible as many as 300 more trees will dot the Huron landscape by this weekend.

While still at the discussion stage, a collaborative initiative would provide a publicly accessible guide to the location and species of trees on college property.
