CWG 2018, day 10: Sumit Malik clinches gold in wrestling


India's gold rush on day ten of the Commonwealth Games 2018 continued as Vinesh Phogat and Sumit Malik won their final bouts in respective categories on Saturday at Gold Coast.

With the Gold, Vinesh has become the first Indian woman to win two wrestling gold medals at the Commonwealth Games, having won the honour in Glasgow in 48 kg category. Soon after Sakshi added another medal to her resume, Twitter was full of praise for her. Vinesh won the bout by technical superiority, winning 13 points in comparison to the three points won by MacDonald. She is also a two-time bronze medalist at the Worlds.

Rich medal hauls for wrestlers and boxers on Day 10 Vinesh saw off Miesinnei Genesis of Nigeria and Rupinder Kaur to all but ensure a place in the gold medal match. Sakshi had a comfortable lead at the beginning of the second period, but with some seconds to go, Ford scored one one-point and a two-pointer but lost the match in the end. It was her good defence right at the end that helped Malik get her first major worldwide medal since the 2016 Olympics. Sumit gave India their 22nd gold in the men's freestyle 125 kg after his opponent Nigeria's Sinivie Boltic was ruled out of the final due to an injury.

Somveer alos took home Bronze in the Men's Freestyle 86kg category after beating Canada's Alexander Moore 7-3 in the final. With 23 Gold, 13 Silver and 15 Bronze, India now ranks third on the medals table (51).

Earlier, double Olympic-medallist Sushil Kumar, Rahul Aware and Bajrang Punia had picked up gold medals for India on the first two days of the competition.
