Should Jorge Sampaoli be unable to rely on Aguero for the World Cup, the Argentina coach could turn to Inter captain Mauro Icardi or Juventus striker Paulo Dybala, both of whom were left out of his most recent squad.

The Club's all-time leading scorer has roared up to the tantalising mark of 199 goals in City's title-winning 2017/18 campaign, with 30 in all competitions this season.

Aguero hurt his knee in trying in March which meant he missed games against Stoke City, Everton and Liverpool. He didn't give a timescale for his return, with the World Cup starting in two months, saying only he is "fully motivated to get back soon to the field".

"He made a huge effort, because after the action from Ashley Young against United he had problems in his knee", said Guardiola.
