Storm system brings snow, ice to Florida

Every East Coast state from ME to Georgia has either a winter weather advisory, a winter storm warning or a blizzard warning.

January 3, 3:45 p.m.: A blizzard warning is in effect for the East End from 1 a.m. on Thursday to Friday.

Most parts of Nassau County are predicted to receive up to eight inches of snow when all is said and done, with localized totals as high as 10 inches, while Suffolk could see up to 14 inches of snow, according to the National Weather Service.

Schools were ordered to close in NY, many parts of New Jersey, Boston and other cities through the region.

In the Southeast, winter storm warnings were issued in such usually mild locations as Tallahassee, Savannah, Ga., Hilton Head and Charleston, S.C., North Carolina's Outer Banks and Wilmington, N.C.

As the storm gripped the East Coast, Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe and Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal declared a state of emergency in their states through Friday.

"We can not and will not order people up in trucks to fix lines when the winds are too high", Malloy said.

Icy conditions and an early-morning accident caused a closure of part of I-10 early Wednesday according to police, but later in the day, it was open again after the icy conditions subsided.

"Stay away from the coasts", the National Weather Service in Boston tweeted.

The weather service said its Tallahassee office measured a snow and sleet accumulation of 0.1 inch (2.5 mm) on its roof, the first time Florida's capital has had snow since 1989.

At least 17 deaths were blamed on dangerously cold temperatures that for days have gripped wide swaths of the USA from Texas to New England.

Many schools were also closed and the Senate cut short its working week due to the extreme weather.

Airlines had canceled more than 2,100 Thursday flights so far, on top of 558 Wednesday, according to FlightAware, an online tracking service.

In central Florida, the state's largest theme parks announced that water attractions such as Disney's Typhoon Lagoon, Universal Orlando's Volcano Bay and SeaWorld's Aquatica were closed Wednesday because of the cold snap. Snow also is expected along the coasts of Georgia and SC.

Making the most of the South's bitter cold snap, the North Carolina Zoo in Asheboro offered discounted tickets for those willing to courageous the cold to see polar bears frolic in their kind of weather, along with Arctic foxes and elk. As a result, the accumulation of snow and winds intensifies, which can cause property damage and power outages. Snow should taper off in South Jersey around 5 to 6 p.m. and in North Jersey sometime around 8 or 9 p.m., Miller said.

A blast of bitterly cold air from Canada is expected to arrive on strong northwesterly winds on Friday as the storm departs.
