Sri Lanka sacks ODI skipper Perera

All-rounder Angelo Mathews, who was announced as Sri Lanka's ODI captain until the 2019 World Cup on Tuesday says that he agreed to take up the role on the insistence of his mentor Chandika Hathurusingha.

Tharanga was then striped of the captaincy after a string of defeats and replaced by Thisara Perera, who oversaw the team's 2-1 loss in India last month, on a temporary basis. "I invited Angelo to reconsider and accept the captaincy once again, further to the lengthy discussions I had with the head coach, selectors and the management of the SLC", added Sumathipala. "I took a few a few days to think about it, and because of a few reasons I made a decision to accept". He's not here just to survive. It is very easy to work with him as he has his goals. The other countries are dying to take him as he is the best in the business. Cricket has given me a lot. "This is an hour of need and if I don't take it up now, I will feel bad in a few months time", Mathews told journalist moments after being appointed as captain.

The upcoming tri-nation ODI series featuring Bangladesh and Zimbabwe will be Mathew's first assignment as the captain, while Chandimal will continue to lead the Test team.

"My thought was that he's the best person to lead the ODI team because he warrants a place on his own performance", Hathurusingha said. The lone new face is Shehan Madhushanka, the 22-year-old paceman, who has only played three first-class games and as many List A matches. Dinesh Chandimal was named the new test captain, while Upul Tharanga was put in charge of the limited overs side.

"He's got pace and you can't coach that", Hathurusingha was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo. "But going into the World Cup we need that stability". "We've chosen Madushanka as a player we might use in the long-term".
