Root expected to be fit for ODI opener

Australia's middle-order was scratchy leading selectors scrambling ahead of next year's World Cup looming.

Skipper Eoin Morgan struck an unbeaten 81, which included seven fours and two sixes, as England chased down their victory target with more than nine overs to spare.

"The one-day side is very settled, with experienced individuals playing the way they want to play".

The first ODI against England takes place on Sunday January 14 in Melbourne.

While seamer Mark Wood has also been recalled in the Test squad after struggling with injury, Ashes underperformers Moeen Ali, James Vince and Mark Stoneman have all been retained. There was some chat about the depth of Australia's pace-bowling resources during the Test series (Jackson Bird's outing on the very bad MCG surface was the only time it was put into action) and this series may give some indication how it stands with the white ball. During the same period, Australia reached 300 12 times in 50 matches, including 10 out of 23 matches batting first.

"I know he felt as if he didn't quite have the rhythm but, certainly today, his control was magnificent", Morgan said.

England should be able to call on Joe Root for their first one-day global against Australia following illness.

Morgan stopped short of stating what England's line-up will be in Melbourne, but indicated Jonny Bairstow, Jason Roy and Alex Hales could all play.

The rejig has been caused by the absence of Stokes and the return of Hales, who was suspended at the end of last summer after both were caught up in the street fight in Bristol. Dawid Malan has been called as a replacement of Stokes.

Eoin Morgan has defended his head coach, Trevor Bayliss, before England's ODI series against Australia. I've played a lot against those guys in the Champions Trophy, in series in England and here too. "Apart from that, it's just what I've learned from other coaches".

All-rounder Glenn Maxwell was dropped when the original squad was announced, with captain Steve Smith questioning the World Cup-winner's training and consistency.

"Even though it was a full-strength England team, I still felt pretty confident out there and was able to back my skills". "It is astonishing - he would be my first player on the team sheet".

Smith confirmed Josh Hazlewood will be rested but was tightlipped on who would replace him from uncapped West Australian quicks Jhye Richardson and Andrew Tye.

The series against Australia will be interesting if only to see how England respond to the Ashes defeat.
