One police officer dead, four more wounded in Colorado mass shooting


Five sheriff's deputies and two civilians were shot in what the Douglas County Sheriff's Office called an "ambush" style attack.

"I can't tell you how hard it is to sit down with a spouse of a deputy who has been killed n the line of duty", the haggard-looking sheriff said at a news conference later Sunday. Four other deputies and two civilians were also shot, officials said.

Parrish and the four other officers were hurt when a gunman opened fire.

"There were well over 100 rounds fired. from the suspect", Spurlock said.

Police firearm teams surrounded Copper Canyon Apartments while attending paramedics wore body armour for protection. It's unclear if the suspect, a roommate or apartment worker let them into the unit. Police said the suspect had no prior criminal history.

"Wyoming statutes are pretty clear: If someone is not making an immediate threat, they can not by held for a mental evaluation".

Two men were in the apartment, and one of them told the officers that the other was "acting freaky and may be having a mental breakdown", the statement said.

Three patients with non-critical injuries were treated and released from Sky Ridge Medical Center in Lone Tree, Colorado, hospital spokeswoman Linda Watson said.

Resident Steven Silknitter, 50, told The Denver Post that he heard 15 to 20 shots.
