No Official Confirmation From Pakistan on Suspension of Cooperation


Pakistan has suspended defence and intelligence cooperation with the USA amid growing tensions over Washington's suspension of military aid to Islamabad, Defence Minister Khurram Dastgir has said.

Pakistan has suspended its military and intelligence cooperation with the United States according to Pakistan media reports.

Dr Faisal said Pakistan had been supporting the U.S. by all means for last 16 years and continuation of that relationship was critical for regional peace.

"We would like Pakistan to come to the table and assist us in this effort", he said adding that the suspension of security aid is not a cutoff and no funds have been reprogrammed.

Khan said that China, Russia and Iran were equally important as the U.S. to Pakistan and reaffirmed Foreign Minister Khawaja Asif's statement signalling that the alliance between Pakistan and the U.S. was over.

He had also claimed that the "United States has foolishly given Pakistan more than 33 billion dollars in aid over the last 15 years, and they have given us nothing but lies & deceit, thinking of our leaders as fools".

On Monday, a Pentagon spokesman said the United States had conveyed to Pakistan to take "concrete steps" against terror groups to earn hundreds of millions of dollars in aid.

To prepare them for this new-found freedom, the first women's vehicle showroom has opened in the city of Jeddah on Thursday. Construction teams had scrambled to build female toilets and line off a women-only parking lot ahead of the game.

The current U.S. -Pakistan feud first kicked off after Trump first took office, when he called out Islamabad in August 2017 during the announced of a new strategy for Afghanistan that called for an increase in troop levels, saying Washington could "no longer be silent about Pakistan's safe havens for terrorist organizations".

"Pakistani-Americans are patriotic and have served our nation in battle. It is time for a courteous yet ruthlessly candid dialogue between Pakistan and the U.S.", he said.

Although it is still not clear how much aid has been stopped, Mr Olson said the decision could affect about $1.3 billion worth of annual aid.

Islamabad had earlier showed restraint despite allegations by the USA leaders and aid suspension but the defense minister's statement could be seen an indication that his country will be forced to make decision in its national interests.

At a seminar titled "Contours of Security Environment of Pakistan", he reportedly said that despite the USA spending billions of dollars, it was facing defeat in Afghanistan and was using Pakistan as a scapegoat for its failures. Tensions between the United States and Russian Federation have been high since Russian Federation was accused of meddling in the latest USA presidential elections.
