Nassar, a former doctor for Michigan State and Team USA gymnastics, was sentenced to 40 to 175 years in prison on seven counts of criminal sexual conduct, a first-degree felony.

The eight-person board is expected to vote unanimously at a Wednesday morning board meeting to put the three-term MI governor in charge, according to two sources with direct knowledge of the board's plans.

Also coming on board is another former MI governor, Jim Blanchard, a Democrat, who will be named as a senior adviser.

On Friday, the trustees apologized to the victims of Nassar.

"We the Michigan State University women's rowing team are joining together as a united front to fight for safety for all and hold the university accountable to do so", senior rower Nicole Marek stated. The board is expected to unanimously approve the Engler appointment, according to the source, who said trustees see him as a "decisive leader" capable of leading the university through "chaos on campus" resulting from the Larry Nassar sexual assault scandal.

The announcement comes one day after MSU Athletic Director Mark Hollis announced his retirement.

Jason Cody, a spokesman for the university, said Tuesday afternoon he did not have information about a possible interim president and was only able to confirm that the board plans to meet Wednesday morning.

The Michigan State House speaker, Republican Tom Leonard, praised the choice in a statement. Schuette is running for governor this year and has come under criticism for not launching a review of Michigan State much earlier.
