Kapil Mohan, the man behind iconic Old Monk, passes away at 88

Despite giving India and the world the legendary dark rum, Mohan himself was a teetotaller, a person who never drank alcohol. Mohan, an entrepreneur who served as chairman and managing director of Mohan Meakin, was awarded the Padma Shri - the fourth highest Indian civilian award - in 2010 by the Government of India under the trade and industry category.

Brewed in the Himalayas by Mohan Meakin, the famous Old Monk rum is one of the cheapest rums sold in India.

Brigadier (retd.) Kapil Mohan led the reins of the first known brewery, Dyer Meakin Breweries.

As per reports, Mohan, who was keeping unwell in his last years, died of a cardiac arrest in Ghaziabad's Mohan Nagar area. It later merged with another British-run brewery, Meakin & Co, and focused its brewing operations in Solan, Himachal Pradesh.

Kapil Mohan is survived by his wife and a daughter. His leadership breathed a new life into the company, which went to establish three distilleries, and two breweries, among many other enterprises.

Mohan also launched malt houses, glass factories, breakfast food, malt extract factories etc.

"Respect to the Late Brig Kapil Mohan, a proud fellow National Service Volunteer-Reservist of the Territorial Army (TA), and the creator of Old Monk Rum, " tweeted another.

Mohan was highly admired by his colleagues for his hard work and the manner in which he carried forward the legacy of his brother V R Mohan and father N N Mohan.
