Dick Vitale Isn't Happy With ESPN's LaVar Ball Coverage

The Los Angeles Lakers knew what they were getting in LaVar Ball when they drafted his son Lonzo.

Why is Ball a story?

The topic suited Warriors coach Steve Kerr perfectly. I've never had to talk to a parent who is upset about playing time.

"I hope he's enjoying his European vacation, and his sons are enjoying playing over in Lithuania, because those two, in my opinion, have no shot at playing in the NBA", Miller said. People are eating out of his hands for no apparent reason. No other generation of National Basketball Association players have had to deal with what we have to deal with in our era. That sells, and that's what's true in politics, entertainment and now in sports. It doesn't matter if there's any substance involved with an issue. It's just 'Can we make it really interesting for no apparent reason?' There's nothing interesting about that story.

Ker's comments on media and how Ball became popular are interesting because he's right that it wouldn't be a story if people didn't care about it.

The fact that, two days after Ball challenged the credibility of their coach, the only person within the organization to offer a full-throated public endorsement of Walton is 22-year-old rookie Kyle Kuzma is an indictment of those in charge.

Kerr is talking about weighty issues, and as usual, speaking with authority and competence, but these things aren't going to be fixed overnight, even if we somehow banned LaVar Ball from appearing online or on television ever again.

While Kerr has previously taken exception to ESPN's fixation with all things Big Baller Brand, he is especially perturbed about LaVar's attacks on Walton.

If he wants to show everyone he's his own man, if he just wants to try to win games and get better, if he wants to stay with the Lakers, then it's time to convey to his father what Klay Thompson has with his and countless others in all professions have with theirs. That's an unfortunate reality in the for-profit news industry.

Ball has turned himself into the center of attention at each level of his sons' development. But while LiAngelo, 19, and LaMelo, 16, may not be in a position to stand up to their father when he was feuding with UCLA and Chino Hills (California) High School, respectively, Lonzo is in a different spot.

According to ESPN Stats & Info's official Twitter account, Ball even made Los Angeles franchise history, as the first Lakers player with a double-double that included a single-digit point total since forward Lamar Odom back in 2008. I thought what Rick said was terrific. He said Luke Walton is too young, at 37, to coach the Lakers and "has no control" of the team.

"For one, the Lakers' record has been awful, and while James would make it a lot better, there is reason to doubt that even he and a super friend like George could fix all of the Lakers' problems", Faigen wrote Tuesday.
