United States vetoes United Nations resolution rescinding Trump's declaration of Jerusalem as Israel's capital

U.S. President Donald Trump listens to question from the media on South Lawn of the White House in Washington, U.S., before his departure to visit the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia, U.S. December 15, 2017.

In his final weeks in office, Mr. Obama broke with longstanding USA diplomatic tradition when he authorized an "abstain" vote rather than veto a January Security Council resolution condemning new Israeli settlements in the West Bank land claimed by the Palestinians.

That resolution, which had 14 votes in favor, "reaffirmed. that Israel's establishment of settlements in Palestinian territory occupied since 1967, including East Jerusalem, had no legal validity, constituting a flagrant violation under worldwide law and a major obstacle to the vision of two States living side-by-side in peace and security, within internationally recognized borders". Trump insisted that after repeated peace failures it was past time for a new approach, saying his decision was merely based on reality. The UNSC demanded the United States rescind recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital.

Both Israel and Palestine wants to take control of Jerusalem.

Haley, who has been a supporter of Israel since she took the United Nations envoy post, said, "For decades, Israel has withstood wave after wave of bias in the U.N". Mr. Abbas said in public comments to senior Palestinian officials Monday that "a insane person wouldn't accept" such a role for Washington after Mr. Trump's announcement two weeks ago.

Haley told the council "the United States has never been more committed to peace in the Middle East", and called accusations that the U.S.is setting back the prospect for peace "scandalous".

"We call on all countries that share this commitment to learn the hard lessons of the past and work to bring Israel and the Palestinian people in good faith to the peace table", she said. Palestinian officials had scrapped plans to meet with him.

With the Palestinians rejecting USA mediation, Russian Federation said it was ready to take over.

Existing-home sales continue to strengthen
The last time the turnover in home was this healthy was in December 2006, when properties sold at an annual pace of 6.42 million. The statewide median price for condo-townhouse properties in November was $176,000, up 8.6 percent over the year-ago figure.

"The United States has the sovereignty to determine where and whether we establish an embassy", said Haley, describing the vote as an "insult" that "won't be forgotten".

"We are ready to become an honest mediator here", he said.

The United States along with Britain, China, France and Russian Federation can veto any resolution presented to the council, which requires nine votes for adoption.

Egypt drafted the text, which does not mention the United States or President Trump by name, but does refer to "deep regret at recent decisions concerning the status of Jerusalem" and calls for "reversal of the negative trends on the ground that are imperiling the two-State solution".

The former minister went on to say that the U.S. was in fact always "too biased and less sensitive to the worldwide law" in its efforts aimed at resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and it was a "major structural defect in the peace process that contributed to its failure".

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu compared Ms. Haley to a "Maccabi" - ancient warriors celebrated for expanding Jewish-controlled territory on the Mediterranean in the pre-Christianity era.

He said Haley "lit a candle of truth" and dispelled "lies".

America has yet to acknowledge this, however, and continues to undermine the security of the world's gift of the state of Israel.

"Jerusalem has been the political, cultural, and spiritual homeland of the Jewish people for thousands of years - they have had no other capital city", she continued.
