New York Police Arrest Bangladeshi Over Subway Bombing

Mayor Bill de Blasio called the blast an attempted terrorist attack, and officials said it appeared to be a rare if not unprecedented attempt at suicide bombing on US soil.

"This is New York", Governor Andrew Cuomo said. Thank God the only injuries we know at this point were minor.

BILL DE BLASIO: This was an attempted terrorist attack. NPR's Joel Rose reports from NY. "The first attacker came through the visa lottery and the second through chain migration", Trump told reporters after he signed the National Defence Authorisation Act (NDAA) 2018.

The explosive device used was attached to Ullah's body using velcro and zip ties and was based on a pipe bomb, Deputy Police Commissioner John Miller said. "We are not going to allow them to disrupt us", he said.

Trump in October called for an end to the process of "chain migration" under which an unlimited number of migrants can enter America based on a single green-card holder who came before them.

The blast took place in the subway station at the Port Authority bus terminal, not far from the city's iconic Times Square, sparking commuter panic and travel disruptions.

Since 1965, America's immigration policy has centred on giving preference to people with advanced education or skills, or people with family ties to U.S. citizens and, in some cases, legal permanent residents.

President Trump called for the elimination of the Visa Lottery program and an end to chain migration.

The expats also said Bangladesh government should immediately talk with the Trump administration so that the innocent Bangladeshis living in the USA do not fall victim to any action. "That's exactly what they want, and that's exactly what they're not going to get".

Ullah was charged with providing material support to a terrorist group, use of a weapon of mass destruction and three bomb-related counts.

"They've been bombing in my country and I wanted to do damage here", sources with knowledge of the investigation told the New York Post.

The man arrested in the bombing, Akayed Ullah - who told investigators he wanted to retaliate for American action against Islamic State extremists - came to the USA from Bangladesh in 2011 on a visa available to certain relatives of U.S. citizens.

Authorities said Ullah migrated to the USA on a F-43 visa, a family-based visa for those who have relatives already in the U.S.

The detained suspect from Monday's attack gained entry to the country as a result of chain migration initiated by a relative, who received a visa and ultimately became a USA citizen through the visa lottery program.

Meanwhile Bangladesh embassy in Washington has condemned the incident. He's 27 years old and lives in Brooklyn. She said she would see him leaving the house with what appeared to be camera equipment and assumed he was on his way to work.
