Julian Assange's Twitter account has vanished

The disappearance of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange's Twitter account has created confusion among his fans and followers, the media reported.

And while the internet was rife with conspiracy theories about Twitter disabling the account, it initially appeared that the account was disabled externally between midnight and 1 a.m. GMT, according to Gizmodo. The platform has recently had a crackdown on prominent Twitter users overstepping the lines and violating Twitter's terms of service, which has seen many prominent alt-right accounts suspended.

Twitter did not immediately return a request for comment, the Examiner said. In the meantime, consider it an early Christmas present.

Christmas 2017: What restaurants are open on December 25?

We've reached out to Twitter (via email) and Wikileaks (via Twitter DM) for additional information and will update if we hear back.

Assange has been living in the Embassy of Ecuador in London, UK, since 2012. He faces rape allegations in Sweden, which he denies, and is seeking asylum as he believes that if he leaves the embassy he will be extradited to the USA over WikiLeaks' publications.
