Seattle Mayor Ed Murray announced Tuesday that he meant to resign just hours after the newest allegation was revealed from a fifth accuser. Though he ended his re-election campaign in May, Murray until Tuesday had insisted he would not resign, despite calls for his exit. He left the office so the scandal would not overtake what the mayor needs to do.

Members of Seattle City Council asked in July for Murray's resignation.

The city "must focus on governance and day-to-day business without distraction," Harrell added, saying he has a plan in place for a "seamless transition".

MAYOR Ed Murray did the right thing resigning Tuesday.

"I felt it was wrong and I felt dirty", he said, claiming that Murray "told me it would be OK and it would be our secret and not to tell anybody".

Joseph Dyer came forward Tuesday with new charges of sexual abuse, accusing Murray of molesting him in his mother's Long Island home in the 1970's, when Dyer was only 13.

"I did not sexually abuse any of her [Maryellen Sottile's] children", Murray said. Single family housing! The owner of the farm near South Park "wants to sell it to someone who will keep the equestrian farm intact", the Seattle Times' Mike Rosenberg reports. "He did so. I think that's best for the city", Durkan said. "We hope it helps the others in some way".

Murray, 62, claims the allegation stems from a split in the family, which began with a common-law marriage between his sister and Sottile's brother.

This is the fifth public allegation of sexual assault against Murray.

"My sadness was about another victim coming forward, and sadness over leaders like Ed Murray who are unable to face the truth, remain in their positions", she said.

The mayor is a well-known defender of the gay community, the one who turned him into the 53 mayor of Seattle. He chose to do so, and I think that was the right decision.

Moon, an urban planner, said the mayor had become a distraction and a detriment to the city and that's why she called for him to resign in May.

The mayor, for his part, says the new allegation is false, and criticized the Times for covering this.

Lloyd Anderson, another man who met Murray in Portland as a boy, has backed Simpson's allegations, and said Murray also paid him for sex when Anderson was a teenager.

"I am just so happy", said Simpson, 49, one the first people to publicly accuse Murray of sexual abuse.
