Matthew Stafford throws 4 TD passes; Lions rally past Cardinals

His favorite target? Rookie wide receiver Kenny Golladay, who caught four of Stafford's passes for 69 yards and two second-half scores. If the Cardinals can get him in space in this one, the Lions do not have the talent on defense to stop him.

So many different predictions are out there on how the Cardinals will do this season.

The team was lucky to get out of the first period down only 10-0. He jumped over an Arizona defensive back on a fade route that was reminiscent of what the Lions used to do with Calvin Johnson. Although Johnson did have six receptions for 68 yards, he also fumbled the ball twice and left the game late in the third quarter due to a wrist injury.

Golladay beat Bethel again on his second touchdown. It showed he might be an effective full-field weapon sooner than anyone imagined. But losing Johnson for any period of time is a blow.

The offenses in this game can put up points, so it may be wise to choose the over in this one.

Still, when he was on, Palmer looked like the quarterback who was an MVP candidate two years ago.

Keep it locked here all game long as Free Press sports writer Carlos Monarrez gives you the up-to-the-minute live play-by-play from the Detroit Lions vs. the Arizona Cardinals NFL season opener from Ford Field. Detroit's most consistent receiver was the picture of reliability Sunday. That capped a 94-yard, 12-play drive.

Palmer was picked off on the Cardinals' first series, but Stafford returned the favor. While the sack numbers weren't there, there were four quarterback hits and a decent amount of pressure (but a lot of missed sack opportunities).

There are some players we will be keeping our eye on this weekend.

The Lions defense also successfully held Arizona's All-Pro running back David Johnson to just 23 rushing yards on 11 attempts. The Lions defense might be better than expected. And after Jamal Agnew's nice punt return, Dwayne Washington's unnecessary roughness penalty on the return pushed them back to their own 14. By the start of the second half, Jamal Agnew was Detroit's kick returner. Detroit just backed up a Brinks truck to Matt Stafford's house so the confidence is certainly there that he can lead them to the Super Bowl and if the likes of Golden Tate, Marvin Jones, Eric Ebron, and Ameer Abdullah can stay healthy and productive the Lions are certainly on the radar as a potential playoff team.

Stafford completed 29 of 41 passes for 292 yards. Redfern injured his knee on the play and did not return.
